Korea Rocks Band Photo

I hope most of you already know about the upcoming Korea Rocks UK tour that features acclaimed korean indie/rock bands Galaxy Express, Apollo 18, Gate Flowers and Goonamguayeoridingstella (or just Goonam for short). The tour is being presented by Hyundai Card Music, who have been offering support to Korean bands of late. I think this tour is an important milestone for the Korean indie scene as some bands have been performing in North America as part of Seoulsonic or solo tours, but none have visited Europe before. Well, now the time has come, ladies and gentlemen!
The tour will start in less than a week with the first show taking place on the 24th of April and the entrance fee is … actually there is no entrance fee for the shows in Tunbridge Wells, London and Manchester! You will need tickets or wristbands only for the festival shows at Focus Wales and Liverpool Sound City. Everything was made for you, my dear European friends. So please, don’t ignore the perfect chance to experience the storm of pure Korean rock energy.

Schedule:
April 24: Tunbridge Wells, England at Tunbridge Wells Forum
April 26: Wrexham, Wales at The Bank (Focus Wales)
April 27: Wrexham, Wales at Yales Café Bar (Focus Wales)
April 28: London, England at Barfly
May 1: Manchester, England at Night & Day Café
May 3: Liverpool, England at Studio 2 (Liverpool Sound City)
May 4: Liverpool, England at Kazimier Gardens (Liverpool Sound City)

For those who follow ‘Korean Rock is Real’ all these bands should be familar. So let’s let them speak for themselves about the upcoming tour. The interviewees are Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist; Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist; Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist; Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist. Enjoy!

Could you please describe your band and your music?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – I’m from Galaxy Express. We play wild and noisy garage rock, punk, and psychedelic music.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – I play in Apollo 18. We are a Korean band that makes loud post-hardcore and post-rock.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – Goonam make soulful psychedelic dance music.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – Gate Flowers is a rock band with four members. Our music incorporates elements of grunge, hard rock, blues, funk, and whatever other musical styles we can manage to mix in.

How do you feel about being one of the first Korean rock bands to tour the UK?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – We can’t wait! There are a lot of good musicians on this tour and it will be fun to explore a new place with all of them.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – We feel happy and are really excited! We can’t wait to experience the UK.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – I’m excited. I went to London last summer and played a solo show at an art exhibition there. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the UK and to playing there with our band.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – This is our first time to play overseas. We’ve been waiting a long time for this, and are really excited to introduce Gate Flower’s sound to new audiences.

What are your expectations for this tour?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – Like our past overseas tours, we’re expecting to make new friends with lots of great music lovers and to have some very cool experiences.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – This is our first time to visit the UK, so we don’t have any expectations.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – We don’t really have any expectation either. We’re just excited to play for new people in new places. It’ll be a fresh feeling for us.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – We just want to have a great time at the gigs. And if the audiences do too, we’ll be glad.

Is there anything special you want to see, do, eat, or drink while you are in the UK?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – We want to drink lots of delicious British beer. And I want to ride on a double-decker bus.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – We want to see Stonehenge! And we’re also looking forward to being around good beer throughout the tour. Korean beer isn’t very good.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – London has lots of beautiful parks. I hope we can spend some time relaxing in them. I’d like to spend some time in the Wales countryside too if we can.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – We want to eat fish and chips and drink countless pints of beer.

If you could invite any UK bands or musicians to your shows, who would it be?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – Radiohead and Coldplay.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – The Stone Roses and Radiohead.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood. We covered The Rolling Stones song “Paint It Black” and we are quite satisfied with our version.

Which song from your band do people definitely need to listen to before coming t see you play in the UK?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist)“Horongbul”.
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist)“Orbis”.
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist)“Blood”.
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – “We are One”.

What message do you have for those who are waiting to see you perform in the UK ?

(Jonghyun Park, Galaxy Express guitarist) – Korean rock bands don’t tour the UK often, so please come to the shows. We’re excited to meet all of you!
(Daeinn Kim, Apollo 18 bassist) – Come on and feel Korea’s noise!
(Ung Joh, Goonam guitarist) – Let’s all have a great time together in the UK!
(Seungshik Yeom, Gate Flowers guitarist) – We’re excited and curious to see what kind of chemistry we can create on stage with all of you guys. I guess we’ll find out next week!
